How to file a DBA or Assumed Name in Michigan (online)

From what I can tell, there are two ways: online, or fill out a form and mail it in.

Method 1: File a Michigan DBA Online

You can file a DBA, or Assumed Business name online at LARA: https://cofs.lara.state.mi.us/corpweb/LoginSystem/ExternalLogin.aspx

Login to the LARA portal with your CID/PIN. I didn’t have mine, so I clicked the CID/PIN Recovery link. I was emailed a new pin in minutes and then logged into LARA. The efficiency was awesome.

Once logged in, I selected Form 541 “Certificate of Assumed Name” filled it out, and submitted my payment online using my debit card.

This method is SO MUCH EASIER than printing a form, filling it out, writing out a check, putting it in the mail, and the turnaround time was super fast. I had my DBA in just a few hours because I elected to receive my paperwork electronically by email. So for me, the online method is definitely preferred.

Method 2: Mailing in the Form

Let’s assume you really like things to take longer and be more difficult. In that case, you can print the Michigan DBA (assumed name) from here: https://www.michigan.gov/lara/0,4601,7-154-10401-69104–,00.html

The difficulty is immediate, as they don’t make what link you are supposed to click very clear. At the time are writing this, the link to download the form is hidden in the sentence “A Certificate of Assumed Name form should be submitted by Corporations, Limited Partnerships, and Limited Liability Companies.”

Here let me translate for the State of Michigan:

To download From 541: “Certificate of Assumed Name”, click here: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/541_08-15_527736_7.pdf

Once you’ve downloaded the form, print it out, fill it out and send it to:

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau
Corporations Division
P.O. Box 30054
Lansing, MI 48909

Include a check for $25 in your envelope.

It should take 1-2 weeks to get your DBA.
